Speleofobie

Eenoog aka de Duivelsgrot is gemuilkorfd. In Nederland zijn duizenden open toegankelijke wateren zonder afzettingen waar ook ieder jaar weer mensen in verdrinken, maar met het risico van die paar grotten die we hebben kunnen we kennelijk niet omgaan. Dus sluiten we ze maar af. Jammer deze was wel zo'n beetje de laatste in Nederland waar je nog vrij in kon. Leuk voor de vleermuizen, maar die komen hier op de Sint Pieter toch wel aan hun trekken.---- One Eye aka the Devil's Cave is muzzled. There are thousands of open accessible waters in the Netherlands, that take lives every year, but appearently we can't accept the risk posed by the handfull of caves we have. So we just seal them off. Sad, this was one of the last free accessible ones. Nice for the bats, but there are plenty other caves reserved for them here on the St. Pieter.

Wat hoort hier duidelijk niet thuis? -------- What obviously doesn't belong in this place.

Ik zag het zelf pas een jaar na het maken van deze foto, toen ik hem vergroot in detail bekeek. Voor alle duidelijkheid, ik ga er vanuit dat het geen echte is.:) ----- I didn't see it when i made this picture, it wasn't until a year later when i looked at it in greater detail. To be clear, I don't think it's a real one.:)

Kalketrip-----Red star-thistle

Kalketrip (Centaurea calcitrapa) Terug van weggeweest. Wel of niet inheems? Al rond 1600 gesignaleerd in Nederland, verdwenen in de zestiger jaren van de vorige eeuw. Weer terug gezien uitsluitend op de Sint Pieter sinds 1997, rond die tijd heb ik hem daar ook voor het eerst gezien. Wordt wel gassocieerd met de schapenhouderij.-------Red star-thistle. Back with a vengeance (very prickly). Native to the Netherlands or not? Already described here around the year 1600, disappeared in the sixties. Seen again only on the St. Pieter near Maastricht since 1997, about that time i've seen it there for the first time too. Is often being associated with sheep farming, and considered a very nasty weed in most other (southern) countries.

Zink Lepelblad (Cochlearia pyrenaica), hier op het einde van het voormalige Moresnet, het vierde land van wat vroeger dus het Vierlandenpunt bij Vaals was van 1839 tot 1919. De dichtsbijzijnde volgende groeiplaats ligt in Zuid-Duitsland.----- Zinc Scurvygrass, here near the zinc mine in Moresnet, the next nearest location is in Southern Germany. This zinc mine was the sole reason why one of europe's smallest countries existed from 1839-1919.

Kleurvariatie bij het Zinkviooltje (Viola Calaminaria) op het nieuw ingerichte industriemonument bij Kelmis.Heel leuk om te zien, maar het komt door hybridisering met tuinviooltjes uit het wel erg dichtbij liggende dorp. Het betekent op termijn wel het einde van het echte Zinkviooltje.----- Color variation in Zinc Violets (Viola lutea subsp. calaminaria) at the renewed industrial monument near Kelmis in Belgium. Nice to look at, but it's caused by hybridisation with garden violets from the the nearby village. In the long term it will mean the end of the authentic Zinc Violet.

Ongeveer dezelfde foto, maar dan zonder zinkviooltjes, heb ik 40 jaar geleden gemaakt bij de zinkfabriek in Budel, dezefde witte met zinkoxide uitgeslagen grond.---- I've made the same pictute 40 years ago at the zinc factory in Budel. The same white soil, contaminated with zinc-oxide. Alas no zinc violets there.

Natuurmonument en Industriemonument gaan hier hand in hand.----- Here Natural Monument and Industrial Monument go hand in hand. ******************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Inmiddels (2026) is duidelijk dat de kleurvariatie niet komt door vermenging met tuinviooltjes, o.a. omdat kruisingen onwaarschijnlijk zijn want tuinhybride viooltjes zijn polyploïde en zinkviooltjes gewoon diploïde. De variatie is dus puur natuurlijk en wordt gestimuleerd door de extreem schrale groeiomstandigheden ter plaatse, hierdoor is er veel open grond en worden zwakkere kleurvariaties dus niet weggeconcureerd. Dat maakt het dus alleen maar weer echt leuk :).
